Notes:

[1]Elected.
[2]"No. Voters, 5314. Make a choice, 2658." Governor's Council Records.
[3]"In 35 towns in the county of Kennebec, the democratic Senatorial candidate has 2257 votes - the federal candidates 2183. There are 11 towns to be heard from." New-England Palladium (Boston, MA). April 11, 1809.
[4]The Kennebec Gazette of April 28, 1809 lists incomplete returns of 1297 votes for Nathaniel Dummer and 1184 for Thomas Rice.
[5]"We have received the following official Certificate of the record on the town books of Norridgwock, of the votes in that town in April, last, for Governor and Lieutenant-Governor, as follows: 'At a legal meeting of the male inhabitants of the town of Norridgwock, holden on Monday the 3d day of April, A.D. 1809, Votes were given in as follows: For Governor. For Hon. Christopher Gore Eighty votes. For Hon. Levi Lincoln Twenty-two votes. For Lieutenant Governor. For Hon. David Cobb Seventy-six votes. For Hon. Joseph B. Varnum twenty-two votes. A true copy, as of record-Attest! JOSIAH SPAULDING, Town Clerk.' The forgery and alteration is thus established. We shall merely remark that other returns may have been opened, and so dexterously altered as to have escaped the scrutiny of the Committee; and which cannot be known unless all the votes as stated on the schedule, are published. The Norridgwock votes were entered on the books eighteen for Mr. Gore, and seventy-two for Mr. Lincoln, before the alteration was discovered; and had not the forgery been detected, it would have made the difference, in one small town, of no less than 112 votes against Mr. Gore. We doubt not the Attorney and Solicitor-Generals will take active measures to detect the perpetrators of the fraud; for if such iniquity escapes with imputiny, it will be very easy for the Postmaster-General's deputies to say who shall be Governors, Lt. Governors and Senators (for the Norridgewock senatorial return was also altered) of the several States, in defiance of the suffrages of the People. This subject ought to arrest more attention than it has." Columbian Centinel. Massachusetts Federalist (Boston, MA). June 17, 1809.
