[6]"When our last paper went to press, such had been the effect of delusion, particularly in the E. District, we were almost on the point of yielding to the federalists their claim to a majority in the next House of Assembly. But subsequent accounts afford us ground to believe, that notwithstanding the mean advantage taken of our embarrassing but necessary measure of the federal government--the EMBARGO--the Republicans will still retain a majority in the councils of the state. The depravity of Federalism was never more conspicuous, than in this election--men who but a few weeks previous to the election, were heard repeatedly to declare, that the EMBARGO was indispensibly necessary to the maintainance of our national sovereignty--and that the government had no other alternative but to adopt it or something worse--were seen in caucsuses [sic] and at the pools [sic], taking a decided stand against that measure, reprobating it as ruinous, and urging the people, in order to relieve themselves from its pressure, to turn out and vote for the FEDERAL TICKET!" Columbian Gazette (Utica, NY). May 10, 1808.
