[1]"Alexander had displeased the Republicans by the condemnation, in his message to the Assembly of 1807, of the Court Law of 1806, a law which had reorganized the courts of the state and which had been generally championed by Republicans and opposed by Federalists. Consequently, in 1807, the state was regaled with the queer spectacle of the Republicans actually voting for a Federalist, Benjamin Williams, while the Federalists supported the Republican incumbent, Alexander."
