[8]"Messrs. Goodrich and Brace, declined a re-election." Connecticut Gazette, and the Commercial Intelligencer (New London, CT). October 22, 1800.
[9]"The democrats voted for Hart, Gilbert and Granger, and for no other person. Hart obtained his excess over Granger by the votes of some of the federal party, many of whom believe him a federal man, and only put into the democratic ticket for the purpose of drawing him over to the their side if possible; as he is a very wealthy man, whose purse, could they get access to it, would be serviceable to them, as well as his personal influence and respectability. But, they are grossly deceived in their calculations. General Hart has too long possessed the esteem of honest men, to be seduced by the hollow professions of Jacobins, and has too much at stake in the community, to be willing to introduce a system which is designed to pillage the earnings of the honest and industrious, for the purpose of enriching the prodigal, the pickpocket, and the demagogue. The reason why Gilbert has fewer votes than Granger, is doubtless, that Granger's best friends threw away some votes, lest their darling should again fall in the rear. Such tricks Mr. Gilbert, and every other secondary object of democratic popularity will experience." Connecticut Courant (Hartford, CT). October 20, 1800.
