[7]The Guardian; or, New-Brunswick Advertiser (New Brunswick, NJ), October 23, uses the name William Newbold for Thomas Newbold.
[8]William Helmes, a Republican incumbent, was re-nominated as part of the Republican ticket for Congress. In addition, the Federalists placed him on their mixed-party ticket for Congress.
[9]Two developments at the Republican Party convention, held in Trenton on September 17, 1806, served to exacerbate divisions within the party. The first was replacing incumbent Ebenezer Elmer on the Congressional ticket with Thomas Newbold of Monmouth County (this left the at-large ticket with no representation from the southern counties of Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem). The second was the re-nomination of James Sloan, who was viewed with disfavor by many in the party. In order to capitalize on the rift among the Republicans, the Federalist Party put together a mixed Congressional ticket comprised of Federalists Aaron Ogden and John Beatty, along with Republicans William Helmes, Ebenezer Elmer, Adam Boyd, and George C. Maxwell. The aim of this ticket was to attract support from disgruntled Republicans as well as from Federalists. However, the strategy was employed too late in the campaign. Therefore, only nominal support for it was generated, as can be seen by the great number of scattering votes for Federalists not on the ticket.
[10]Most of the votes for Republicans Ebenezer Elmer, Adam Boyd, and George C. Maxwell came from Federalist voters.
