[1]Massachusetts law required a majority to elect for the U.S. House of Representatives. The original election was held on November 3, 1794. A 3rd Trial would be held on March 23, 1795.
[2]"Boston, Feb. 23. The period, beyond which no returns of votes, for Federal Representatives at the second trial can be received ended last Saturday. There will not be a choice in three of the districts. - In the second middle district, the whole number of votes is 1646 ~ 824 making a choice. Mr. Varnum had 813, Mr. Dexter 803 and their being 30 scattering votes, there is no choice." Amherst Journal (Amherst, NH). March 6, 1795.
