[3]"The Legislature acted upon the Governor's suggestion regarding the election of United States Senators. On December 12, 1798, the Senate met with the House of Representatives and proceeded to the election of two Senators. It appears that Mr. Wm. Cocke is duly elected for six years, to commence the fourth of march next, and Mr. Joseph Anderson for the balance of the time for which Mr. Andrew Jackson was elected."
