[2]According to the Pittsfield Sun of January 13 when, after five ballots, a Speaker of the Assembly still had not been selected, Mr. Ulshoeffer proposed that William Thompson be appointed. This proposition was defeated 73 votes to 41 votes. Mr. Oakly then proposed that William A. Duer be appointed; this was also defeated, 84 votes to 31 votes. Next, Mr. Jackson proposed that Obadiah German be appointed. This proposition was passed 67 votes to 48 votes, and so Obadiah German was made Speaker of the Assembly.
