[1]"Resolved. That the house will proceed to the choice of a Speaker by ballot...There were four ballots, the results of which were as follows:" The Enquirer (Richmond, VA). December 8, 1807.
[2]"In the House of Delegates, three gentlemen were nominated as proper persons to fill the office of Speaker; General Peter Johnston who has served in that capacity for several sessions heretofore, Hugh Nelson of Albemarle and James Semple of Williamsburg. On the first, second and third ballots no decision took place; neither of the candidates having a majority of the whole number...Mr. Semple was then withdrawn; and the 4th ballot decided the election in favor of Mr. Nelson by 91 votes to 67."
