[2]This is the initial election for U.S. Senators from the new state of Illinois. On the first ballot, all members voted twice. As Ninian Edwards received a majority of the votes (32 of 40), he was elected on the first ballot. Two more ballots were held to elect the second Senator. Jesse B. Thomas would eventually be elected on the third ballot.
