[1]Since no candidate received a majority of the vote, the legislature was authorized to elect a Governor. However it failed to do so and the Lieutenant Governor served.
[2]"On Thursday, George R. Burrill, Esq. made a motion that Richard Jackson, jun. Esq. be declared elected Governor, he having a plurality, but not a majority of the votes of the freeman - this was decided in the negative by 52 to 16." The Providence Phoenix (Providence, RI). May 17, 1806.
