Powell, would be elected...met in caucus, when it was determined that Mr. James Chipley, Mr. Thomas Buck and Mr. Thomas Wright should decline and unite their exertions in support of Samuel Kercheval, finding their efforts ineffectual in endeavoring to prevail on Sexton to decline. Mr. Powell, the federal candidate, after obtaining the above number of votes left the bench about three o'clock, having first declared to his friends his wish no longer to be considered as a candidate."
