Notes:

[1]"The poll was then opened for the choice of Selectman and County Treasurer; the friends of free trade (Federalist) supporting one ticket, and the friends of the embargo (Republican) another. At the close the numbers stood as follows:" Salem Gazette (Salem, MA). March 15, 1808.
[2]"TOWN MEETING On Monday morning the inhabitants of Salem assembled in the Court House for the purpose of electing Town Officers. Col. Hathorne was nominated for Moderator, the vote put and carried - but it was, as usual, 'doubted' by the Federalist. The house was then polled, and a committee unanimously appointed to count the votes on each side. Before the committee had half done that service, several motions were made by Federalist - and so much was said, so much time consumed, and the house became so crowded, that the committee found it impracticable to return a just statement of the votes - the Meeting was therefore adjourned to the Tabernacle, where Col Hathorne was declared to be chosen Moderator." The Essex Register (Salem, MA). March 16, 1808.
