Notes:
[1]Elected.
[2]The Raleigh Minerva (Raleigh, NC) lists Thomas Newton as the War candidate and Swepson Whitehead as the Peace candidate.
[3]"At the contested election in 1809, .... the majority for the republican candidate in the whole district, was 352, the whole number of votes given being 1750. Now the majority is increased to 387, when the total number of votes, owing to a large requisition of the militia from the counties of Princess Anne and Nansemond, being ordered out on duty, is only 1307." The Enquirer (Richmond, VA). April 13, 1813.
[4]Suffolk, April 12. "This day the Poll in Nansemond County stands thus: -- 176 majority for Newton."
[5]Norfolk Gazette and Publick Ledger (Norfolk, VA): "On Monday the election for Nansemond came on, when Mr. Newton obtained over Mr. Whitehead the peace candidate, a majority of 176. In the contested election 1809 Mr. Newton's majority was 270, in the county of Nansemond. At present Mr. Newton is 95 ahead."
[6]Norfolk, April 20. "At the close of the Norfolk County election last evening the votes stood thus:"
[7]Norfolk, April 27. "the election . . . in this District, closed with the Norfolk Borough election which was held yesterday. The general result is as follows: Thomas Newton 124 majority."
[8]"The Election of Members for the National and state Legislatures in this district closed with the Norfolk election which was held yesterday." Possible misprint or typographic error listing Newton with a 134 majority.
[9]Norfolk, April 6. "Yesterday an Election was held in Princess Anne County for a Representative to Congress, and a Senator and two Delegates to the State Legislature. On closing the polls the votes stood thus: Whitehead Majority 81."
[10]Norfolk Gazette and Publick Ledger (Norfolk, VA) and Alexandria Gazette, Commercial and Political (Alexandria, VA): "Congressional Election -- Within four or five days it was known that Swepson Whitehead, Esq. a peace candidate had consented to serve for this district, if elected. On Monday the election commenced in the county of Princess Ann, when at the close of the poll it stood: .... About 150 of the free holders of this county are in the army, which will account for the few votes; the same is the case with Nansemond and Norfolk counties."
