On counting the ballots, they stood as follow: For Mr. Wirt 90, Mr. Stewart 49, Majority 41"."The successful candidates both approve of the political measures adopted by the last Legislature of this Commonwealth, the other gentlemen were opposed." [3]"Richmond, December 4. House of Delegates, Monday, December 1. This day the Assembly opened their session for the present winter. The Delegates began business at one o'clock, in the afternoon, by proceeding to ballot for a clerk. Mr. George Keith Taylor, rose first, and nominated Mr. John Stewart, who had been clerk of the house for four years. Mr. Giles nominated Mr. Wirt of Albemarle county. The house proceeded to ballot, and Mr. Wirt was chosen clerk by ninety votes against forty nine." Winchester Gazette (Winchester, VA). December 18, 1799.
