Notes:
[1]Elected.
[2]Elected.
[3]"From the above it appears, that John Findlay and James Wilson (democrats) are elected to Congress. Mr. Wilson's majority over Mr. McSherry is 218. We would just remark, that had Adams County turned out her Federal strength; had she done even less than she has at former times; had she given Mr. McSherry a majority of but 1000--this old and favorite Candidate would have been elected. It is a lesson, which, we hope, will not pass by unregarded. As it is, we must submit to the majority without repining: But we trust, that on another trial, it will be found, that Federalists will not always remain supine." Adams Centinel (Gettysburg, PA). October 16, 1822.
[4]The Spirit of Pennsylvania (Easton, PA) reports 5289 votes for John Findlay. Several other sources report the same due to their reporting 1685 votes for him in Cumberland County rather than 1658 votes.
[5]The Carlisle Herald (Carlisle, PA) of October 15 reports 728 votes for John Findlay.
[6]The Republican Compiler (Gettysburg, PA) lists these votes under "Heidlersburg", while the Adams Centinel (Gettysburg, PA) lists them under "Tyrone." Today, Heidlersburg is the name of an unincorporated community within Tyrone Township.
[7]The Republican Compiler (Gettysburg, PA) lists these votes under "York Springs", while the Adams Centinel (Gettysburg, PA) lists them under "Petersburg." The area known today as York Springs Borough was informally called "York Springs", "York Sulphur Springs", or "Petersburg" until it was incorporated in 1869.
[8]The American Sentinel and Mercantile Advertiser (Philadelphia, PA), Franklin Gazette (Philadelphia, PA) of October 19, the Lancaster Intelligencer (Lancaster, PA), Poulson's American Daily Advertiser (Philadelphia, PA), The Republican Compiler (Gettysburg, PA), the The Union. United States Gazette and True American (Philadelphia, PA) and the York Gazette (York, PA) report 1685 votes for John Findlay in Cumberland County (and subsequently, 5289 total votes for the district), however this is likely due to inadvertantly reversing the two last digits of the votes for him in Cumberland County.
[9]The Adams Centinel (Gettysburg, PA), The Franklin Repository (Chambersburg, PA) of October 15, Pennsylvania Intelligencer (Harrisburg, PA) and the Perry Forester (Landisburg, October 24 edition), report 1584 total votes for James MacSherry in Franklin County, however the actual sum for the townships and boroughs The Franklin Repository (Chambersburg, PA) also reports in its October 15 edition is 1582.
[10]The Spirit of Pennsylvania (Easton, PA) reports 655 votes for William N. Irvine.
