[3]"On Tuesday last, an Election was held at the Courthouse in this county...at the close of the poll the votes stood as follows:...For Col. Hugh Mercer 426, Gen. John Minor 287, Capt. Larkin Stanard 216." The Virginia Herald (Fredericksburg, VA). April 5, 1805.
[4]However, James McFarlane apparently also served but, unlike Hugh Mercer and John Minor, is not listed among the candidates in the Spotsylvania County Poll Book for this election. James McFarlane is listed as a third delegate, under Spotsylvania County in both the 1918 and 1978 Registers of the General Assembly of Virginia, without explanation and in the 1918 register his name is followed by "(?)".
