[3]"John Branch is elected a Senator of the United States from the State of North Carolina to succeed Mr. Stokes, whose term of service will expire on the 3rd day of March next. [4]This is the final of six ballots, taken on December 14th. On December 13th a motion to postpone the choice of U.S. Senator until the next session of the Legislature was defeated and on Saturday, December 14th, John Branch was elected on the 6th Ballot.
