[5]"Hunterdon County. With great joy we give to our readers the glad tidings, that REPUBLICANISM HAS COMPLETELY TRIUMPHED IN THIS COUNTY!--The following are the Official Returns--from which it will be seen that the whole Republican Ticket has succeeded by Majorities of between four and five hundred, viz. ... The result in this county places it beyond a doubt, that there will be a Republican Majority in both Houses of the Legislature, and consequently in joint-meeting." The True American (Trenton, NJ). October 17, 1803.
[6]"The late election which has turned out in favor of the Democrats, gives to that party a majority of fourteen in Joint-meeting--three in Council, and eleven in the House of Assembly. Hunterdon county in the year 1801, returned a full democratic representation--in 1802 it gave three federal members and two democratic, and this far it has again returned a full democratic representation ... A variety of rumours from Hunterdon and Gloucester, relative to the measures pursued by the democrats to gain the election, have reached our ears ... It is reported that a prosecution has been instituted against the judge of election for Kingwood ; and we are credibly informed that the democrats in one of the Eggharbour townships, in Gloucester, carried to the poll hands and pockets full of tickets, which the officers received as the votes of Tom, Dick and Harry, or any body else. It is firmly believed by many persons of observation, that democrats last fall determined to have the election this year in the counties of Hunterdon and Gloucester, and that this they resolved to effect one way or another." Trenton Federalist (Trenton, NJ). October 24, 1803.
