He was a Republican, but had fallen out of favor with the party in 1812, due to his support of DeWitt Clinton's candidacy for President. He ran for Senate as a Federalist, but many Federalists refused to vote for him. Had an established Federalist run instead of Solomon Southwick, it is probable that the party would have elected both Senators from the Eastern District.
