[2]When the Legislature, elected in 1821, reconvened on January 9, 1822, there were two vacancies in the State Senate. In Middlesex County, the vacancy was caused by the death of Joseph B. Varnum.
[3]The whole number of votes was 113, all of which were for Calvin Sanger, as Samuel P.P. Fay was not technically eligible, having been elected a Judge of Probate.
