[6]The Rutland Vermont Herald (Rutland, VT), October 25, and Northern Sentinel (Burlington, VT) report 12628 votes for Jonas Galusha, 1035 votes for William Bradley and 658 votes for Dudley Chase.
[7]Several opposition tickets were announced during the campaign, and various Republican newspapers warned the voters that these state tickets, even though headed by Republican candidates for Governor, were being supported by the Federalists.
[8]North Star (Danville, VT), September 9: "THE ELECTION. In this town, the Ticket for Governor, Lieut. Governor and Council, as published in the Star, received an average vote of 218--and there was not a federal vote given at the poll."
[9]The Vermont Republican and American Yeoman (Windsor, VT), September 6: "The Election.--It would seem, from remarks lately made by editors of republican papers in our sister states, whose interest in the prosperity of their country induces them to regard 'the signs of the times' in this state, that fears are entertained for our political safety. The discerning and indefatigable editor of the Corncord 'N.H. Patriot' expresses his belief, that the petty parties into which the republicans have unfortunately been divided, are the result of federal contrivance. That some individuals of that party have got up the several 'mongrel' tickets in the federal papers, with a view to confuse and impose upon some unwairy republicans, is evidently true: but we are not willing to believe that the republicans of this state have become so remiss and insensible of their duty, as to be duped by their opponents; neither do we think that the federal party are so well organized, or so confident in their strength, as to oppose the re-election of our present rulers. Not but that they would, gladly, if they saw the least prospect of success, attempt to 'break the state,' (as Mr. Hill observes) 'and convert the great republican interest into a variety of little factions--and thus set brethren of the same principle at variance, seize the reins, vault into the seat, and drive the car whither they would.'--But in Vermont, as in almost every other state in the Union, they are completely disheartened and will not, we presume, seriously attempt to 'vault into the seat' of government, until, as a party, they have disheartened themselves of the load of odium which their conduct during the late war has heaped upon their memories. They have too much good sense, at this day, while they witness the happy effects of the measures they then so warmly opposed, to indulge any hope of regaining the confidence of the community, and seem magnanimously disposed to let the republicans quietly enjoy the fruits and rewards of their arduous services. The division which gives our friends abroad some anxiety, is the consequence of a too great indifference on the part of republicans, which has led them to neglect the adoption of means to preserve union and concert. The effect of this indifference, we trust, will be nothing more nor less, than to ensure our future union and harmony. It may, indeed, give the federalists two or three members of the Council, for the term of one year, but it will not vary the political character of the legislature, the ensuing year, if our fellow-citizens are as punctual at the polls as it is their duty to be, on Tuesday next. Though little has been said in our papers, by way of electioneering, our brother editors and friends in other states need be under no apprehensions for the success of our common cause. The good sense and former experience of our Yeomenry will convince them of the importance of being prompt in exercising their elective functions, and of so exercising them as will best promote the public good. To do this, they know also from experience, the necessity of adhering firmly to tried and faithful public servants, and uniting in support of the republican Ticket--of choosing men to represent them of sound political and moral principles. They cannot but know the necessity of uniting in support of such men, for representatives to the next General Assembly, and the danger of giving their adversaries opportunity to profit by their divisions, too, caused by personal attachments and prejudices, which ought ever, in such cases, to give way to the votes of a majority of their republican fellow-townsmen.--If this is not the state of parties in Vermont, and if such is not the result of the pending election, we have greatly misconceived of the sentiments of the people. A few weeks will determine." Vermont Republican and American Yeoman (Windsor, VT). September 6, 1819.
