Notes:
[1]Elected.
[2]Return J. Meigs had been living in Louisiana, where he had been appointed a judge. Massie contested the election, claiming Meigs was ineligible due to residency requirements. On December 30, 1807, the General Assembly voted 24 to 20 that Meigs was ineligible.
[3]The Republican party in Ohio split into two factions, one was conservative, with its followers coming mostly from New York and New England, the other, more radical, drew its support from persons of Pennsylvania and Virginia heritage. The Ohio Federalist closely allied themselves with the conservative group and generally supported their candidates for Governor.
[4]Return J. Meigs received votes under nineteen different names.
[5]Nathaniel Massie received votes under five different names.
[6]Due to the numerous votes under other names, the final certified results were Return J. Meigs with 3299 votes and Nathaniel Massie with 2317 votes.
[7]The Original Election Certificate includes vote count of 118 for Return J. Meigs.
[8]Many newspapers list Return J. Meigs with 767 votes. The Senate for the Journal and A History of Knox County list 167.
[9]The Liberty Hall and Cincinnati Mercury (Cincinnati, OH) lists Return J. Meigs with 685 votes.
[10]The Western Herald (Steubenville, OH) lists Return J. Meigs with 389 votes.
[11]The Commentator; and Marietta Recorder (Marietta, OH) listed these results as being from Scioto County.
