As early as the first Federal elections in 1788, there were candidates, who while alligned with one party or another, was supported in the press by both parties in a particular election.


Common Council

Common Council: The administrative body of a corporate town or city; a town or city council.
In Philadelphia the local authority consisted of the Select Council and Common Council, called together the Councils.
