[4]"MEMBER OF CONGRESS--NO CHOICE! The following is an accurate Statement of the VOTES for a Member of Congress, for this District, as returned to the Secretary's Office, by which it appears there is no choice. ... The Votes from Sterling and Hubbardston were not returned in season, and of course were lost; the Votes in those two Towns were ... Which would have made the total number of Votes in the District, for Hastings and Upham, 1144, Whiting, 922. Another trial is to take place on the 24th day of next month, when it is supposed that the friends of Mr. UPHAM, by his request, will give their Votes for Mr. HASTINGS; and that SETH HASTINGS, Esq. and Gen. JOHN WHITING, will be the only Candidates." Thomas's Massachusetts Spy: Or, The Worcester Gazette (Worcester, MA). July 22, 1801.
