[8]"On Tuesday and Wednesday last, took place throughout this state, the Annual Election for Members of the Council and General Assembly, Sheriffs and Coroners. We have not yet received the returns from several of the Counties; but we can with confidence assure our readers that there will be a handsome Republican Majority in the ensuing Legislature. ... In Hunterdon county (where at the last election for Members of Congress the Federal ticket had an average majority of nearly one thousand votes) the Republican ticket for Members of the State Legislature has now succeeded by a majority of nearly three hundred." The True American (Trenton, NJ). October 20, 1801.
[9]"Many a luckless wight, who had pawned his last dollar on the success of Federalism in Hunterdon, is now muttering curses at his own credulity, and the delusive tales of the leaders of the party. Bought wit, is the best. They will henceforward be more cautious of reposing their confidence and cash, on the mere ipse dixit of the Lawyers." The True American (Trenton, NJ). October 20, 1801.
[10]The Federalist and New Jersey Gazette (Trenton, NJ) reports 112 votes for Nathan Stout in Hopewell.
