[2]"The house then proceeded by a joint ballot with the senate, to elect a governor or chief magistrate of this commonwealth, for one year from the 11th inst. On counting the ballots, Mr. Banks reported that the votes stood thus: For James P. Preston, of Montgomery Co. 104, William J. Lewis of Campbell Co. 83, Linah Mimms 9, and Scattering 1 [for a total 197]. So that Col. Preston had a majority of votes, and was accordingly duly elected."
