Notes:

[1]Elected.
[2]Elected.
[3]Gaius Stebbins, and Kitchel Bishop were candidates for Assembly. Samuel Ten Broeck, Edward P. Livingston, Isaac Sargent, and David Hopkins were candidates for State Senate.
[4]Jacob R. Van Alen is an amalgamation of two candidates.
[5]There were discrepencies between the Washington County Official Election Returns and the Official Statewide Canvass, perhaps because of transcription errors. The results listed here are according to the Official Election Returns.
[6]Nathan Wilson and Asa Fitch were the candidates in a special election to replace a Congressman who had been elected in 1806 (under the district apportionment of that time, Washington was in District 12). The votes reported for them from Washington County were not reported on the Official Canvass of votes. These votes were apparently transferred and counted in the special election.
[7]The United States Congressional Elections, 1788-1997: The Official Results uses the name Knickerbocker for Herman Knickerbacker. It lists 6469 votes for Herman Knickerbacker, 6433 votes for Robert LeRoy Livingston, 5914 votes for James J. Van Alen, and 5879 votes for James L. Hogeboom.
[8]Several sources use the name James I. Van Alen for James J. Van Alen. During this time period, the typesetting of the letters J and I were often interchangeable. The name James J. Van Alen is listed on the Original Returns for Washington County and in the 1810 Federal Census.
[9]The Official Statewide Canvass of votes published in newspapers reports some scattering votes that were not recorded in the Columbia County Poll Books. Some spellings of candidates' names differ.
[10]James Brebner was listed in the Official Statewide Canvass as having received 1 vote in Columbia County, but he was not listed in the Columbia County Poll Books.
[11]Herman Knickerbacker received 3 votes as Hermanus Knickerbacker and 1 vote each as Herman Knickerback and Hermance Knickerbacker (the latter of which, was listed as Hermanuse Knickerbacker in the State Wide Canvass, and was listed with a vote as Herma Knickerbacker in the State Wide Canvass (town not listed).
[12]James J. Van Alen received 1 vote as James I. Alen and 1 vote as James L. Van Alen.
[13]"In Hudson...Towards the close of the poll, our jailer, who had just returned from his electioneering labors in the country...brought up to the poll a prisoner who had been in close confinement for more than a year in one of the strong rooms of the jail. His vote was challenged; and he made oath, that he had rented a tenement in the county for the last six months, of the yearly value of five dollars. Waving all remarks on the propriety of bringing a prisoner out of close confinement to vote against freemen, we beg leave to ask where this man rents a tenement?...While we are speaking of this voter, we cannot forebear to remark, that the bare word of this man was accepted by the inspectors as a proof of his naturalizaion, (he being a foreigner) while free men of colour who had regularly voted for years past, were required to produce positive proof of their manumission, before they could be admitted. In one instance, a man of this description, who had become a freeholder, was compelled to ride four miles after his certificate of manumission, which he had held for several years. This fact might excite some surprize [sic], was it not recollected that every one of the inspectors were committee-men duly appointed to promote the election of the democratic candidates." The Balance (Hudson, NY). May 3, 1808.
[14]"Commentary: CRAZY BOB nominated to Congress again !!! Patriotism, talents and experience personified -- Sound text -- wonderful commentary!" The Bee (Hudson, NY). April 12, 1808.

[17]James J. Van Alen received 1 vote as James I. Alen.
[18]James L. Hogeboom received 1 vote as James J. Hogeboom.
[19]The American Citizen (New York, NY), The Balance (Hudson, NY) and the Republican Watch-Tower (New York, NY) did not report town totals for Hillsdale in Columbia County.

These sources reported 1819 total votes for James J.
