[25]"From Virginia, we have received the result of the Electoral Election in only the above counties. If any surprize should be felt at the small number of votes given, it must be recollected that freeholders alone vote in this State. The vote, however, is a very small one compared with the number of freeholders in those counties. In Fairfax, less than one third of the qualified voters gave their suffrages, and in Orange it is believed, the disproportion was equally great. -- This may be accounted for by the entire confidence of the friends of Mr. Crawford in his success in the state, which doubtless induced many of those most distant from the courthouses (where alone the votes are received in Virginia) to absent themselves from the polls. The votes for the other candidates exhibit, it is presumed, a pretty accurate view of the number of their supporters, as it is the characteristic of minorities to rally all their power in political contests."
