[7]"ULSTER COUNTY. With the result of the election in the republican county of Otsego, let us contrast that of the county of Ulster, recently federal, and from which we hope the deluded republicans of the former county, who have voted the federal ticket, may derive a lesson that will not be lost upon them. The republicans of Ulster were unhappily divided and conquered by federal stratagem--but they soon found, that 'the yoke of federalism was not easy, nor its burthen light;' they saw, too, that their government had studied only to promote their happiness, and they determined at once to sacrifice their local animosities on the altar of their country, and unite, like a band of brothers, in redeeming themselves from federal thraldom. The following letter from the Editor of the Plebeian to the Editor of this paper, shews the glorious result of their united exertions. A more honorable triumph never signalised the republican banners. 'KINGSTON, May 1, 1809. I drop you this line to advise you of our glorious triumph in Ulster. We have heard from all but three towns (Lumberland, Liberty and Marlborough) and our majority stands at about 200. The remaining towns will certainly swell it to from 330 to 350. The federal majority last year was 270--making a difference of 600! Our members are Abraham Hasbrouck, John Concklin, Benjamin Bevier, and Abraham S. Hardenburgh. We reduced the federal majority in this town from 196 to 102. P.S. Liberty and Marlborough are just received--they give us 49, more than we estimated. We shall of course have a majority of 380.' " The Albany Register (Albany, NY). May 5, 1809.
[8]The Balance, and New-York State Journal (Albany, NY) reports 98 votes for Charles Baker in Hurley: however, it reports the same total votes for Ulster County as does the Plebeian (Kingston, NY).
[9]The Balance, and New-York State Journal (Albany, NY) reports 282 votes for Abraham Hasbrouck in Shawangunk, however it reports the same total votes for Ulster County as does Plebeian (Kingston, NY).
