[2]"CIRCULAR -- TO the citizens of the Congressional District composed of the counties of... Fellow Citizens, I intend offering myself as a Candidate for a member of Congress, at the next Congressional Election - my pretensions for offering for the honorable Seat, I will here relate to you : in the year 1776, I went into the regular American army, as an officer ; risked my life and fortune, and every thing that was dear to me, for to procure the Independence of America ; I was with our illustriuos Chief, (Washington, whose bones are now mouldering in the dust) through his greatest diffficulties and danger ; I was with him in the battle of Monmouth, and many other battles too numerous to mention. For the rectitude of my behaviour and character, since we gained independence, I refer you to all the citizens of my acquaintance; and should you think my worthy of your suffrage, and honor me with ta Seat in Congress, your favor will ever be remembered, and gratefully acknowledged, by Gentlemen, Your Humble Servant, Samuel Ewing. Russell County (Vir.) Jan. 1st 1804." Rockbridge Repository (Lexington, Va.). April 2, 1805.
