[16]While Andrew Jackson received the 15 Electoral votes from North Carolina, when the election was thrown into the House of Representatives because of a lack of majority among the candidates, the North Carolina congressional delegation voted for William Crawford. Ten congressmen voted for William Crawford (Weldon N. Edwards, Alfred M. Gatlin, Thomas H. Hall, Charles Hooks, John Long, Willie P. Mangum, Romulus M. Saunders, Richard D. Spaight, Lewis Williams and George B. Outlaw). Two congressmen voted for Andrew Jackson (Henry Conner and Robert B. Vance). One congressman voted for John Quincy Adams (John Culpepper).
[17]Of the 20,418 votes for the People's Ticket, 1394 were for John Quincy Adams.
[18]"The result of the Congressional elections in the State has been more favorable than we had been led to anticipate. We now have good reason to believe, that THE WHOLE OF THE DELEGATION, will be decidedly friendly to Mr. Crawford's election." Milton Gazette and Roanoke Advertiser (Milton, NC). September 4, 1823.
[19]"Our adversaries plume themselves upon the majority they are likely to have. But that majority depends for its existence upon the want of true information respecting the claims and qualifacations of Genl. Jackson. Let one great and simultaneous effort be made throughout the State, and the vote of No. Carolina will be given to Crawford without doubt. By letters from the City of New York and from A. Stevenson of Richmond Va. I am informed that those great States will give an undivided vote for Crawford." Lewis Williams to Thomas Ruffin. August 15, 1824. The Papers of Thomas Ruffin. 311.
[20]"As for Crawford and Clay, they stand no chance. The contest, it is thought, will be between Jackson and Adams; and we think Jackson will get a majority without troubling Congress with the election." The Star, and North-Carolina State Gazette (Raleigh, NC). August 20, 1824.
[21]"We believe the interest of J. Q. Adams is daily increasing in this section of the State; and we hope that, at the day of the election, if a ticket can be formed, he will have a decided majority over either of the other candidates." Joseph Young printed in the Western Carolinian (Salisbury, NC). August 24, 1824.
[22]"It is worthy of particular notice, that the people every where express an invincible dislike of the caucus candidate, and of the whole caucus management." Western Carolinian (Salisbury, NC). August 31, 1824.
[23]"We have been advised of two or three instances, in different sections of the state, where, on trial, there was a majority of the citizens favorable to Mr. Adams' election as President, in which they resolved, with zeal and unanimity, to support the People's Ticket, as the surest means of defeating the intrigues of the caucus managers, and preserving, inviolate, the purity of our Republican institutions. Indeed, we are everyday assured, by respectable supporters of Mr. Adams, that, although they disagree with the friends of Gen. Jackson, as to the man of their choice, their views of local and national policy are generally in perfect accordance with those of the advocates of the General." Western Carolinian (Salisbury, NC). August 31, 1824.
[24]"It appears strange the friends of the caucus candidate should object to Gen. Jackson for voting to protect domestic spirits when it is known that their candidate for the Vice-Presidencey, Monsieur Gallatin, actually fomented an insurrection against the government, because Congress, during the Presidency of Gen. Washington, laid a small tax on whiskey, the Monsieur's darling beverage. Let them remember the whiskey insurrection, and say no more." Western Carolinian (Salisbury, NC). September 14, 1824.
[25]"If, however, the General should succeed in this State, it must be by a very small majority, and he will owe his success to the friends of Mr. Adams, as without their co-operation, the Crawford Ticket would have prevailed.- There have not been less than 4 or 5000 votes given in this State by the friends of Mr. Adams to the Jackson Ticket... Many of these voters have expressed their preference for Adams upon their tickets." Raleigh Register, and North-Carolina State Gazette (Raleigh, NC) quoted in The American, and Commercial Daily Advertiser (Baltimore, MD). November 24, 1824.
[26]"If justice is done, Mr. Adams will receive at least five out of the fifteen votes of this state, as the friends of Adams and Jackson both voted for the People's Ticket." Baltimore Patriot and Mercantile Advertiser (Baltimore, MD). November 24, 1824.
[27]"Official returns from all the counties in this state having been receieved, it is ascertained that the people's ticket, as we anticipated, has succeeded by a handsome majority. North-Carolina has now broken her shackles,- the influence of Virginia in our state politics will no longer paralize our exertions and keep us in the background: the dignity of the state has been nobly asserted and the triumph is complete." Catawba Journal (Charlotte, NC). November 30, 1824.

[75]"We also learn from our correspondant, that at the Cross Roads, in Stokes, a club of caucus men had associated there, with the view of preventing any of the people's tickets from being given in; and on the day of the election, every man who was opposed to the caucus, when he attempted to vote, was assaulted, his vote wrestled from him and trod under foot.
